Enrollment and Registration
Connect Carolina restricts registration in a FYS to first year students, specifically, students in their first and second semester of college. Note: Connect Carolina identifies a student’s classification by credit hours, so a first year student with by-exam (BE) credit and/or articulating transfer credit may be identified as a sophomore or junior on a FYS class roster.
FALL TERM REGISTRATION
Incoming first-year students fill out a first-year interest survey. Students have the option to select their top 10 FYS. Based on the survey results, students may be pre-registered for a fall FYS. The rest of the seats are released during New Student Orientation (NSO) registration sessions over the course of the summer. To insure equal access to FYS seats across the NSO sessions, all FYS registration during NSO is under the control of the FYS Office. Please do not register students in a FYS during this period. At the beginning of August, first-year students are allowed back in to ConnectCarolina add and drop FYS. On the first day of classes, the department’s course scheduling officer may take control of class enrollment (add instructor consent) at the behest of the course instructor.
SPRING TERM REGISTRATION
First-year students who are not enrolled in a Fall FYS receive priority registration for Spring FYS.
- During Waves 1 and 2: All non-honors First-Year Seminar (FYS) seats are reserved for first-year students who did not take an FYS in fall 2021. These students may register in one FYS during this priority registration window.
- Beginning November 19 (Open Registration): The remaining FYS seats are made available to all first-year students. A first-year student may register in up to two FYS during Open Registration. Please note: a first-year student may only register in up to two FYS total during their undergraduate career.
The First Year Curriculum Program and the Office of the University Registrar handle the priority registration process. Please do not register students in FYS during this priority window. On the first day of classes, the department’s course scheduling officer may take control of class enrollment (add instructor consent) at the behest of the course instructor.
On the morning of the first day of class, scheduling officers can add “instructor consent” to FYS in ConnectCarolina if the instructor would like to exercise more control over enrollment in their FYS. Some instructors take control of their FYS in response to requests from students who are eager to enroll. Other instructors take control because their FYS progresses too quickly to incorporate students who miss the first few sessions. We apprise all FYS instructors of this policy and ask them to notify their department’s course scheduling officer if they want instructor consent put on their course when classes begin. Please be aware, instructors do not have access to enroll students directly into FYS. They must get in touch with their course scheduling officers to do so. Some course scheduling officers have found it helpful to communicate with their FYS instructors before classes begin to verify that instructors are aware of and understand this opportunity.
