Eligibility

Enrollment in FYS is restricted to full-time students in their first two semesters of college. Thus, part-time students are not eligible to register in FYS. Although transfer students are in their first year at Carolina, they are not considered first-year students from the perspective of FYS eligibility. Transfer students whose transfer credits cause them to be classified as “first-year” may be permitted to enroll in a FYS but they must request and receive permission of the Associate Dean of First Year Curricula. Early College students who elect to be considered first-semester, first year students upon matriculation at Carolina are eligible to enroll in a FYS.

Enrollment

Enrollment in FYS is limited to a maximum of two FYS in any one semester, and a maximum of two FYS during a first-year students first year at Carolina. Enrollment in a third seminar can only occur with an approved petition from the Associate Dean of First Year Curricula, and will not be approved for a third seminar in a single semester.

Summer Enrollment

Enrollment in FYS during summer registration is strictly limited to one seminar per student until all students have had the opportunity to register for classes. After that, all remaining seats in the FYS will be released and students may enroll in a maximum of one additional seminar (no more than two, total).

Spring Enrollment

During spring enrollment, students who have not enrolled in an FYS during the fall will have priority registration for the spring. Enrollment during this period will be strictly limited to one FYS. Once priority students have had the opportunity to enroll in one FYS, all remaining seats will be opened to all first-year students. No student will be permitted to enroll in more than a total of two FYS during their first year, except with written approval from the Associate Dean of First Year Curricula.

  • During Waves 1 and 2: All non-honors First-Year Seminar (FYS) seats are reserved for first-year students who did not take an FYS in fall 2021. These students may register in one FYS during this priority registration window.
  • Beginning November 19 (Open Registration): The remaining FYS seats are made available to all first-year students. A first-year student may register in up to two FYS during Open Registration. Please note: a first-year student may only register in up to two FYS total during their undergraduate career.

A first-year student whose first semester at Carolina is in the spring may miss the opportunity to enroll in a FYS because his or her official designation as a student occurs late in the registration schedule when most FYS will already be filled. Any incoming student who faces this situation can contact the Associate Dean of First Year Curricula before enrolling to see if an arrangement can be made that will facilitate his or her mid-year entry into college by reserving a seat in a FYS.
